You’ve probably heard people chatting about ‘one of those jumpers’, you know, ‘with the yellow eagle’? Well, the golden eagle has a rich history we’re pretty proud of, so I think it’s about time we get the history books out and share it with you.

In the late 1960s, long after Lyle and Scott was established in 1874, it was decided that the booming golfwear industry would be a perfect launch pad to diversify us from other knitwear brands. In 1967, at the Open in Carnoustie (a well established Golf Club since 1842) the first Golf range was made available featuring a limited number of elegant, classic pieces including a not so subtle bright orange merino roll collar- although no eagle was to be found at this stage. At this time American golfer Doug Sanders had a huge love of brightly coloured golfwear, all featuring the manufacturer’s logo. (Check out one of his matching outfits thanks to This passion for colour and style is what inspired Lyle and Scott to develop their Golf range and commission it’s very own motif.

The eagle couldn’t have been a better choice of motif. Not only a magnificent bird of prey perfect for symbolising Lyle and Scott’s reputation for reliability and quality but it is also a symbol connected with Scotland and excellence. Of course, there is another reason- the eagle has strong golfing connotations as it is the term used when a player manages the feat of achieving a hole two shots below par.

The eagle began its flight and was immediately registered as a trademark.

In 1968 Lyle and Scott attended their first Open Golf Championship with their striking new golf range and very quickly managed to stamp their authority on the golfing market which to this day remains strong.

The eagle is now a globally recognised symbol and is our leading brand identity element and has come a long way from the 1969 image you can pictured (left). From the Vintage Golden eagle to the Club Green eagle, the moment you clap eyes on it you know you’re looking at a Lyle and Scott quality made garment seeping with history. For instance, out Limited Edition Sweater with unique design, as worn by Greg Norman when winning the 1969 Open, clearly illustrates we have a winning motif.
